Short-term memory loss may best predict Alzheimer's

Measureable memory problems that indicate mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may more strongly predict Alzheimer's disease than biomarkers such as changes in brain volume or levels of certain proteins in cerebrospinal fluid, a new study suggests. Researchers found that two measures of delayed memory were associated with a higher risk of MCI developing into Alzheimer's. It's important to note, however, that not all cases of MCI progress to Alzheimer's. The search for Alzheimer's biomarkers remains an important research goal for detecting Alzheimer's before symptoms start.
